Inside Salisbury: Street party anyone?
Wiltshire Council encourages early applications for VE Day street parties
by Annette J Beveridge
IT IS 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day took place and for those wishing to celebrate with a street party, it is important to check whether permission is required.
Wiltshire Council encourages people to come together to celebrate and thank veterans on this anniversary date when the Second World War ended in Europe on 8 May 1945 and the council has gathered important guidance to help ensure celebrations run smoothly but also complies with any necessary permissions.
Cabinet Member for Highways, Councillor Nick Holder, said “We are looking forward to celebrating VE Day and want to ensure our local communities all have the information they need to celebrate this historical occasion.
“We understand that many of our residents will be looking forward to hosting their own celebrations, and we’re encouraging them to apply early for the necessary permissions. By planning ahead, we can all help make this special anniversary a memorable occasion for Wiltshire’s communities.”

If an event requires roads to be closed, applications must be submitted a minimum of eight weeks in advance so ideally be received no later than March 13, 2025. Applicants should consider whether it is safe or practical for the road to be closed.
Some local parks or green spaces will also require permission including:
Your garden
Village hall/green
Local park/field
Local sports field
If residents are hosting an event on Wiltshire Council-owned land, straightforward applications for permissions can be processed within two weeks.
If a road closure is required, people can request an application form at https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highways-special-event-road-closures.
Contact residents first to ensure everyone is happy for a street party to go ahead. Additional permits may be required if entertainment or the sale of alcohol is to take place.
