Inside Salisbury: Animal neglect increases across Wiltshire
RSPCA anticipates more than 700 calls this Christmas Day

WORRYING statistics have been released by an animal welfare organisation stating animal neglect is increasing in Wiltshire.
The RSPCA is concerned that animal neglect may increase as pet owners experience financial hardship over the festive season. This comes after reports revealed a 16 per cent increase (532 recorded) in neglect reports across the county between January and September 2024.
RSPCA Superintendent, Jo Hirst, said: “The large 25% increase in the number of pet neglect calls we are taking is a major concern during our busy winter period when many people are facing more financial difficulties, and we fear this upsetting trend will continue.
“One call every four minutes is a frightening statistic. Coupled with this we have also seen a startling increase in abandonment cases up 30% in just three years.
“Sadly we expect the crisis to worsen as more people tend to struggle with increased costs around Christmas time with presents to buy and extra food shopping - along with energy bills.”
On Christmas Day, more than 700 calls about animal suffering are usually received and for many animals, the RSPCA is the only hope.
The Christmas Rescue campaign can help make a difference and will help centre staff, rescuers, and veterinary teams to continue the good work.
